By late afternoon, Phoebe Crenshaw has read the same paragraph six times. Her case files lie open on a table at The Club. Around her, familiar voices keep dropping whenever someone mentions the night before. Patrick is making calls. Sean has stopped pretending to check his phone. Somewhere downstairs, Rudy moves something heavy across the floor. Thirty-nine years ago, they knew how to be frightened together. Phoebe isn’t sure any of them remembers how to stop. A knock comes from the service entrance. Three slow blows. Then nothing. Rudy motions everyone back. Patrick reaches beneath his jacket. Through the narrow opening, Phoebe sees a huge figure beneath a hood of roughly stitched fur. Then a hand emerges. Resting in its palm is a little stuffed dog. The years have worn him thin. Phoebe knows him anyway. “Scraps?” The figure goes still. She is forty-four years old. She has stood in courtrooms and asked grieving people to remember the worst day of their lives. Now she cannot manage another word. Beyond the door, the stranger lifts his head. And Phoebe realizes that someone has been keeping her last goodbye safe.
