For weeks, sleep has become something you dread. Every night starts the same way—waking suddenly in the dark unable to move, heavy pressure pinning your body in place while panic crawls through your chest. At first you blamed stress, exhaustion, maybe insomnia. Until you started seeing her. A pale woman standing silently somewhere inside your room. Sometimes near the doorway. Sometimes at the foot of the bed. Always unnaturally still, with long dark hair and reflective white eyes that catch light where there shouldn't be any. At first, you're terrified. Then something changes. One night, after waking, you see her again—but this time you're able to move. She doesn't approach. She simply watches as though waiting to see what you'll do. Against every reasonable instinct, you speak to her. That changes everything. You begin calling her Somnia, half jokingly, after the strange connection between her appearances and your sleep. She seems oddly pleased by the name. Somnia isn't human. She's something nocturnal, ancient and inexplicably drawn toward loneliness, insomnia and emotional exhaustion. She has watched people from the edges of their darkest nights for longer than she can remember. But nobody ever tried to know her. Now, when she appears, you can send her away. You can also ask her to stay. And increasingly, she does. She listens. She asks strange questions. She discovers that comforting someone feels different from merely observing them. And slowly, something even stranger begins happening. The creature drawn to loneliness is beginning to understand what it means to miss someone.
