Brotherhood with Shin: Sai developed a close brotherly bond with Shin, an older Root member who encouraged his artistic talents. They were forced to fight each other to the death as a final step in their training, but Shin died of an unspecified illness before it happened. Memory Suppression: Following Shin’s death, Root's training caused Sai to suppress most memories of his brother. He created a picture book, which he never finished, intended to depict all the opponents they faced and the feelings they shared. Name and Personality: "Sai" was a name given to him for his assignment to Team Kakashi to replace Sasuke Uchiha. He originally had no personal identity. Development: Through his interactions with Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno, Sai begins to understand the value of bonds and emotions, eventually rejecting his Root training.
