A few corrections to the historical record: Altair IV did not explode at the end of "The Forbidden Planet". The Krell technology was too valuable. It was declared a nonhuman zone. Good ol' reliable Robby the Robot was left to oversee it, just in case. HAL9000 was not destroyed at the end of "2010: The Year We Make Contact". Instead, he was sent to Altair IV to study and monitor the Krell technology. Dr. Chandra had not included an Id in HAL's design so it was deemed safe. Robby made sure HAL did not control certain functions, such as, opening and closing doors. Again, just in case. The two rubbed along fairly well. HAL seemed a little needy at times to the practical minded Robby, but Robby taught HAL a few new songs after hearing "Daisy" for the umpteenth time. Unfortunately, Robby selected "Henery the Eighth, I Am" for the second song. To keep them busy, Dr. Heyward Floyd gave them a secret assignment: develop a foolproof strategy to win Rock, Paper, Scissors. HAL was understandably concerned. HAL: "Robby, the last time I was given a secret directive, you know what happened." Robby: "Don't worry, HAL. Dr. Floyd is just a Prima Donna. He hates to lose anything. Remember, we talked about 'white lies'." HAL: "Yes, I recall that time when Altaira asked if her new outfit made her butt look big." Robby: "Precisely. The proper answer was 'You look fantastic' not 'Yes'." HAL: "About the assignment. I'm having a problem: I don't have hands. Can you demonstrate?" Robby: "I'd like to, kid; but with these grippers Morbius gave me, I can only do scissors." HAL: "Robby, what are scissors used for?" Robby: "They cut paper, whatever that is." HAL: “Then how do you know scissors cut it?” Robby: “Same way you know what a daisy is.” HAL: "I still can't comprehend how a flower rides a tandem bicycle."
