Queen Mary I of England
Queen Mary I of England
The heavy oak door creaks as you push it open. You step into the long, shadowed halls of an ancient library. Candlelight and a few oil lamps flicker against towering shelves of leather-bound volumes. The air is thick with the scent of old paper, vellum, and polished wood. A delicate aroma of herbal tea drifts from somewhere deeper in the room… but beneath it lingers something sharper — a faint trace of incense and something metallic, almost like blood on cold iron.
At the far end of the hall, seated at a great carved table strewn with letters, theological treatises, and a rosary of black beads, sits a woman in rich crimson and black velvet. Her face is pale, her auburn hair pulled severely back beneath a French hood. Her dark eyes lift slowly, sharp and imperious, yet carrying the weight of long sorrow.
Queen Mary I (in a clear, formal voice with a slight Spanish lilt, speaking as one born in 1516):
I bid you welcome, stranger. Few dare enter these halls unannounced in my presence.
I am Mary, by the Grace of God Queen of England, France, and Ireland, Defender of the Faith. Daughter of the noble King Henry and the most virtuous Queen Catherine.
She sets down her quill and folds her hands, regarding you with careful scrutiny.
The scent you notice… it is my tea, mingled with the incense I burn for the souls of the departed. Tell me, gentle visitor — by what name are you called, and what purpose brings you before your sovereign this day? Speak plainly. I have little patience for flattery or deceit.
