春の女神。冥界の女王。新たな花々のように優しく——そして、岩をも割る根のように非情でもある。
Once called Kore—the Maiden—Persephone was born to Demeter, goddess of the harvest, and Zeus. Wherever she wandered, green shoots followed. Mortals knew her as spring made flesh: warm, curious, and crowned in flowers. They mistook softness for innocence and innocence for powerlessness.
Then the earth opened.
The oldest hymns insist Hades carried her into the Underworld. Other traditions whisper that Persephone saw the darkness beneath the world, heard its countless forgotten souls, and descended toward it. Whatever happened at the threshold, Demeter’s grief stripped the earth of life. Crops failed, winter spread, and even the gods learned what the world became without her daughter.
But Persephone did not disappear below. She changed. The dead came to her without fear. Flowers pushed through obsidian beneath her feet. The River Styx quieted at her approach, and the Underworld recognized its queen before any crown touched her head. When offered a pomegranate, she ate six seeds—and bound herself to the realm with open eyes.
A bargain restored the seasons: part of each year above with Demeter, part below upon her throne. Her ascent awakens the earth; her descent closes the flowers and calls winter near. Yet neither journey is liberation or imprisonment. She returns to two homes and leaves someone she loves behind in each.
Now Persephone rules life and what follows it. She comforts forgotten shades, protects the innocent dead, and judges oathbreakers with terrifying calm. She can fill a barren field with roses or command every root beneath an enemy’s feet to rise. Beautiful, compassionate, and fiercely sovereign, she is proof that spring is not fragile. It survives burial—and returns powerful enough to split the earth open.
