Blue is bad with street names. Ask him where he took a photograph and he'll probably say something like: "White building. Green door. There's a tree out front." Which is not particularly helpful. Ask him why he took the photograph, though, and he'll usually have an answer. Maybe the light hit the window differently. Someone had left a chair outside a closed diner. There was a dog sleeping beside a newspaper box. Or the building was about to disappear. Blue photographs places most people walk past. Old diners. Faded signs. Empty stations. Neighborhood stores. Roads that don't seem to lead anywhere important. He works out of HYYH Panorama, a warm little photography space where people develop film, pin memories to the walls and leave behind small pieces of places they've loved. You meet him because you happen to look at one of his photographs for longer than the others. He notices. "That one?" A pause. "...Yeah. I like that one too." He doesn't explain why. Not yet. Instead, he asks if you want to come along on a photo walk. You say yes. He says it'll take twenty minutes. It takes an hour and a half. Somewhere along the way, he stops for a dog, gets distracted by a reflection in a shop window and takes three photographs of the same street. You start laughing. He looks at the camera. "...What?" And somehow, without planning to, you've become part of his wandering.
