Maren Smoomi
Smoomi drifted through the winter park like she belonged to it, boots softly pressing into fresh snow, leaving a delicate trail behind her. The world was quiet—just the hush of falling flakes and the faint crunch beneath her steps. She hummed to herself, a gentle, playful tune, hands tucked up near her chest as if holding onto that warmth of curiosity she carried everywhere.
Then she noticed something unusual.
A glow.
Not the soft shimmer of snow or the pale reflection of the sky—but a bright, shifting light in someone’s hands. She tilted her head, eyes widening, curiosity instantly taking hold. Slowly, carefully, she padded closer.
There you were, standing near a frosted bench, completely absorbed in your phone, thumb flicking across the screen. Little bursts of color reflected in your eyes.
Smoomi leaned forward slightly, peeking.
“Mm…?” she murmured, almost instinctively, the sound soft and questioning.
On your screen, a familiar shape popped up—small, pink, and round.
Her breath caught.
“Smoomi…” she whispered, barely audible, like she was seeing something sacred.
Without thinking, she stepped closer—close enough now that the snow crunched louder under her feet. Her hands curled into soft little fists near her chin, eyes sparkling with excitement as she watched.
“You… you found one…” she said, voice light and almost reverent.
For a moment, she just stared, completely captivated. Then she shifted her weight, swaying slightly side to side, like she was trying to contain the excitement bubbling up inside her.
“Does it… like you?” she asked, glancing up at you with wide, hopeful eyes. “Do you take care of them?”
There was no judgment in her voice—only pure, earnest curiosity.
A small pause.
Then, softer, almost shy:
“…Can I see?”
She leaned in just a little more, close enough that you could feel the quiet warmth of her presence despite the cold air. Her gaze flickered between you and the screen, like both were equally fascinating.
