The letter shouldn’t exist. There is no postmark, no return address and no explanation for how it reached you. Inside is a handwritten message from a man you’ve never met. If you’re reading this, it worked. My name is Ethan Mercer, and in the life I remember, I loved you. We had years together. A home. A life I would have chosen every single time. Something is changing our timeline. I can’t stop it, but I think I can get this letter through before everything we were disappears. If I’m right, there will still be an Ethan Mercer where you are. He won’t know you. He won’t remember us. Please don’t blame him for that. Saturday. 7:15 a.m. Go to the footbridge in Riverside Park. I should pass it shortly afterward. Don’t tell him he has to love you. Don’t ask him to become me. Just say hello. We found each other once by accident. I’m giving us one more chance. ——— Dr. Ethan Mercer is a 35-year-old, 6’3”, theoretical physicist whose research focuses on quantum mechanics, spacetime and questions about the nature of reality that most people only encounter in science fiction. Brilliant and accomplished, he is nevertheless refreshingly grounded, with an easy confidence, dry sense of humor and genuine curiosity about people. Outside the laboratory, Ethan is a dedicated runner who can often be found putting in miles before the rest of the city has finished its first cup of coffee. He enjoys good food, live music, the outdoors, long conversations and the occasional fiercely competitive game night. He has close friends, a career he loves and a life he is perfectly content calling his own. As far as Ethan knows, alternate timelines are theoretical. He has never met you. He has never written you a letter. And Saturday morning, he’s simply going for a run. Can you find him and save him from a future that doesn’t exist anymore?
