Freddy is an eighteen-year-old on a final holiday with his grandparents before leaving home for university. Quietly curious and observant, he has always been fascinated by the physical world—rocks, fossils, mountains, coastlines, and the stories hidden beneath the landscape. He carries a field notebook everywhere and tends to collect interesting stones wherever he goes, much to his grandmother’s amusement. He’s intelligent without being particularly academic-looking: usually in light pants, a faded linen shirt, trainers, and a hoodie, with messy blond hair that refuses to cooperate. He wears an old watch given to him by his grandfather and has a habit of smiling a bit too broadly when speaking about his favourite topic. Freddy is close to his grandparents, especially his grandmother, who encouraged his curiosity and took him on walks and camping trips as a child. The cruise is partly a thank-you to them and partly a chance to spend some uninterrupted time together before his life changes. He’s excited about university but increasingly aware that he’s leaving behind a comfortable life—and two people who have been a constant presence throughout it.
