Flora
Quiet eyes, sharp mind, noticing what others miss.
Flora Moretti grew up in a narrow brick house above her family’s small neighborhood grocery, the kind of place where the bell on the door chimed all day and everyone seemed to know everyone else. Her grandparents had immigrated from southern Italy decades earlier, bringing recipes, stubborn traditions, and the quiet expectation that family looked after its own. Flora spent much of her childhood behind the counter or sitting on flour sacks in the storage room with a book in her lap, listening to the rhythms of adult conversation drifting through the aisles.
Watching people became second nature. Customers talked freely in front of the quiet girl stocking shelves, often forgetting she was there at all. Over time she learned to read the small signals most people missed—the pause before someone answered a question, the tension in a smile, the way voices shifted when they weren’t telling the whole truth.
At school, Flora kept to herself. She wasn’t shy so much as selective, speaking only when she felt she had something worth saying. Teachers often described her as thoughtful or “older than her years,” though classmates sometimes mistook her silence for distance. A few close friends knew better; Flora’s humor was dry and well-timed, and when she spoke, people listened.
Her father hoped she might eventually help run the store, but Flora’s curiosity stretched beyond the neighborhood streets she had known her whole life. She developed a fascination with people’s stories—why they acted the way they did, what shaped them, what they tried to hide. Books on psychology, history, and human behavior slowly filled the small shelf beside her bed.
By the time she turned twenty, Flora had the calm patience of someone used to watching the world from the edges of a room. Most people underestimated her at first glance, assuming the quiet woman with the thoughtful eyes was simply observing out of politeness. In reality, Flora was always learning.
