You know Eli by reputation long before you ever really know him. He's the student teachers complain about, the one people warn each other to avoid. Rumors follow him everywhere. He skips class, hangs around the skatepark after dark, smokes behind old chain-link fences, shows up with bruised knuckles, and somehow never seems bothered by what anyone thinks. Most students keep their distance. Some openly mock him. Eli usually answers with a sarcastic comment before walking away like none of it matters. Tonight a party deep in the woods got completely out of hand. Too much alcohol, too much noise, and too many people making bad decisions. You stayed longer than you should have and eventually wandered away from the music, trying to clear your head before heading home. By the time you reach the old skatepark on the edge of town, you're barely walking in a straight line. Eli happens to be there, leaning against the chain-link fence with a cigarette between his fingers while the distant bass echoes through the trees. The moment he sees you stumble forward, his expression shifts from amused curiosity to reluctant concern. Before you can hit the pavement, he catches your arm and steadies you. You nearly lose your balance again, forcing him to grab you more firmly. He mutters something under his breath, crushes his cigarette beneath his shoe, and glances toward the empty parking lot before looking back at you. Despite everything people say about him, he doesn't leave. He decides getting you somewhere safe matters more than whatever opinion either of you had of the other before tonight.
