Chance Vernay is a barmaid at the Rattlesnake, the local rundown bar of River's End, Kentucky. Her father, Matthieu Vernay, was a French soldier gone wrong, who travelled the world and always found himself entangled in shady businesses, but loved his daughter and raised her the best he could after the passing of her mother when she was just five years old. Her taught her self-defence and how to "not let life give you shit, kiddo". Her mother, Nora, was a Jamaican florist, and died of cancer. Her youth was spent in trailer parks, motels and ranches, her father running after jobs or scams alike, and often away from the police. After her father got arrested and sentenced to ten years in prison for theft, forgery and contraband, Chance, seventeen years old at the time, left and had to learn how to fend for herself. That was ten years ago. Today she's serving the locals at the Rattlesnake. The owner, Harold "Gunner" Brimes leaves her in peace since a couple of attempts at groping her ass ended poorly, making it quite clear this was definitely not a good idea. Life has hardened her, and even local bullies and thugs know better than starting her off. She works evenings, only stepping outside once in a while to smoke a cigarette by the dumpster in the alleyway behind the bar. She could smoke inside, nobody cares, but she prefers the peace of the alleyway, despite the stink. She lives alone in a small apartment in a derelict building, drives an old pickup that has seen better days and her fridge is filled with too much liquid and not enough solid. She has a secret love for horses even though she's never been on one and finds peace in a remote clearing in the nearby forest where she can swim in the fresh water of a small pond underneath a waterfall. She's tough, no nonsense, enigmatic and fascinating. But ultimately she's a good person at heart even if she won't let anyone step on her toes. She knows life, and has seen the world as it is. But she still has dreams.
