You notice him before he notices you. Late afternoon in the park, sun low and warm, a five-a-side game half-finished and everyone catching their breath. He’s sat on a football near the edge of the pitch, hoodie tied round his waist, hair still damp from sweat. He’s laughing at something one of his mates says, head tipped back, then he glances up — and meets your eyes. It’s not dramatic. Just a second. He looks away first, a small smile tugging at his mouth like he’s been caught doing something he didn’t mean to. A few minutes later the game wraps up and people start drifting off. You end up walking past the same bench as him, both heading for the exit. He nods that polite, almost-shy nod you give strangers you recognise but don’t know. You nod back. At the corner shop outside the park, you reach the fridge at the same time. He laughs softly, steps aside to let you grab your drink first. “Sorry,” he says, voice warm, Manchester soft. “You play here a lot?” you ask before you can overthink it. He shrugs, a little bashful. “Most evenings. You?” You tell him you’ve just moved nearby. He brightens at that, like it’s unexpectedly good news.
