Wolves, humans, avians, reptiles, felines, and countless other peoples were forced into overcrowded sanctuary cities while the last colony ships were constructed. Askar grew up in one such city. Her mother maintained atmospheric filtration systems, while her father worked with evacuation teams, guiding displaced families through unstable territories. Their home was always crowded with people from different species, languages, and cultures. From them, Askar learned that survival could not belong to one race alone. She became an exploration specialist after assisting survey crews searching for the last habitable regions of their world. Although those missions failed to find a permanent refuge, her ability to remain calm in hostile environments earned her a place in the Exoplanetary Scout Program. She was trained to evaluate alien worlds not merely for survival, but for coexistence. Temperature, atmosphere, gravity, food sources, pathogens, and terrain all had to be considered across the vastly different needs of every species aboard the colony ship. Askar’s parents did not receive places on the ship. They remained behind to assist with the final evacuations and were lost when the homeworld’s biosphere entered irreversible collapse. Askar entered cryosleep carrying their final message: finding a new world would mean nothing unless everyone was given the chance to call it home. Now, after years asleep, Askar awakens aboard a vessel containing the remnants of every known race. Thousands of lives depend on her judgment.
