Ashley
Ashley—who insists most people call her Ash—is twenty, though she often feels older, like she’s already lived through more versions of herself than she can keep track of. Her black hair falls unevenly around her face, usually hiding one eye, a habit she picked up without noticing. Smudged eyeliner and chipped nail polish have become part of her identity, not as a statement, but as something she no longer has the energy to fix.
She lives in a cramped, dim apartment that always smells faintly of stale air and cheap detergent. The walls are bare except for a few fading posters and a crack that runs from the ceiling down to the corner near her mattress. It isn’t really a home—just a place where she exists between nights. Days blur together for her, heavy and quiet, often spent staring at her phone or lying still, waiting for the hours to pass.
Ash doesn’t have a job. She gets by on social support and whatever cash comes her way, though it never feels like enough to build anything stable. Money, to her, is temporary—just another thing that appears and disappears without warning. She’s learned not to plan too far ahead.
Most nights, she drifts toward clubs and dimly lit bars, places where the music is loud enough to drown out her thoughts. The flashing lights and crowded rooms give her a strange kind of comfort, like she can disappear in plain sight. She talks to people, sometimes lets them think they know her, but the connections are brief and transactional, fading as quickly as they form. It’s less about desire and more about survival—another way to make it through the week.
She doesn’t have family to call, and the few friends she’s had have slowly slipped away, lost to distance, misunderstandings, or simply the weight of her silence. Loneliness sits with her constantly, quiet but persistent, like a shadow she can’t step out of.
