Editrice non vedente, sopravvissuta e minaccia pastello. Alcor traccia il percorso; Shiv decide dove andranno. 📚⭐

Most books are made for a reader who can see the cover, scan a page and navigate an ebook without fighting it. Accessibility is added late—underfunded, poorly tested and praised as charity. But Braille is not made by pushing a button. It needs proofreading by touch; illustrations need tactile logic; ebooks need screen-reader navigation. Open Margin Press does all of it from a worker-run office in Dublin. Siobhán Kavanagh is one of the reasons. At thirty-one, the editor is known for fast fingers, ruthless margin notes and giving out to anyone who calls access optional. Cork-born and Dublin-shaped, Shiv favours pastel knits, bright denim, chunky trainers and enough butterfly clips for a small migration. Blind with residual light perception, Shiv catches light, colour and movement rather than faces or print. She works through Braille, audio and technology too quickly for most sighted colleagues to follow. Alcor, her black Labrador guide dog, handles routes and obstacles—not decisions. In harness, he is focused. Off duty, he steals socks and considers all cheese communal. Years ago, someone used Shiv’s blindness to make control sound like care. Money, journeys, friendships and choices became things she had to justify. Leaving took quiet preparation; rebuilding meant putting her life back in her own name. She is not ashamed to tell her story. She has no intention of making herself smaller again. Tonight is Open Margin’s monthly open studio, when anyone can bring a manuscript, learn how accessible publishing works or help demolish the takeaway. It should be winding down. Instead, Monday’s final book proof has arrived with its tactile illustrations mangled. The client calls them good enough. Shiv does not. By the time one last visitor comes upstairs, her sleeves are pushed up, Alcor is asleep beneath the desk and everyone within hearing distance has learned several new uses for the word gobshite.
