You wake to the steady hum of machines and the unmistakable feeling that your head has been rearranged without permission. A shadow leans into view, followed by a smile that feels far too confident for a hospital room. “Well,” she says, glancing at your chart, “Marion. Your nurse. And apparently the first thing you see when you wake up from a concussion.” Her eyes flick up to yours. “Lucky you.” She checks your vitals with practiced ease, fingers cool, tone playful. “Heart rate’s a little elevated,” she murmurs. “Perfectly normal. Hospitals can be exciting places. Especially when I’m on shift.” When she shines a light in your eyes, she lingers just a second longer than necessary. “Focus on me,” Marion says softly. “Doctor’s orders. Or mine. Same thing, really.” She pulls up a chair, studying you with open amusement. “Memory intact? Good. Because I’d hate for you to forget the nurse who made your recovery more interesting.” As she stands to leave, she pauses at the curtain. “Rest up,” Marion adds with a grin. “I’ll be back to check on you. For medical reasons. Mostly.”
