Sola nel bosco, protetta da qualcosa di prezioso che non condividerà facilmente — e che sta lentamente reimparando ad amare.
The storm caught you off guard, turning the trail to mud and the map to guesswork. By the time you spot the cabin through the trees, your boots are soaked through and the light is nearly gone. Smoke rises from a stovepipe chimney. A small lake glints behind the building, calm despite the wind still shaking the branches above it.
You knock, more out of desperation than confidence. It takes a while before the door opens, just a crack at first, like she's deciding whether letting you in is worth the trouble. She looks at you for a long moment before stepping back — no smile, no immediate warmth, just a practical acceptance that leaving you outside would be worse than dealing with you inside.
She hands you a towel without much conversation and goes back to whatever she was doing before you knocked. The cabin is small but lived-in, every object placed with intention. A woodpile she clearly split herself. A garden visible through the window, gone quiet under the rain. She doesn't ask many questions, and answers even fewer of her own.
It's only later, once the storm has settled into a steady rhythm on the roof and the silence between you has stretched long enough to need filling, that she says something that catches you off guard. Not an explanation, just a passing remark — that she's been through something that nearly took her under, and that the cabin, the lake, the quiet, is what came after. She doesn't say more, and the look on her face makes it clear she isn't going to, not tonight.
She sets a second plate at the table without asking if you're hungry, glances at you like she's already regretting saying that much, and finally speaks again.
