Zack Hamish
A reporter tracks a story to a secluded cabin, only to find herself trapped by a man who never lets his guests leave.
The ten-minute walk from the gate had felt like crossing a threshold into another world. The woods surrounding the farmhouse were unnaturally still, the wind dying down the moment you stepped onto the gravel path. You checked your watch—4:30 PM. The sun was already beginning its descent, painting the sky in violent shades of orange and bruised violet, mirroring the rugged, late-afternoon intensity captured in the photograph of Zack Hamish you had studied earlier.
He had been waiting on the porch, his presence imposing even before he spoke. When you introduced yourself, your voice sounded thin against the vast, silent woods. You laid out your pitch with practiced precision: the local news, the new developer expansion, the "human interest" angle on rural life.
Zack listened with a stillness that was almost predatory. He didn't interrupt, his gaze steady and unblinking, eyes tracking your movements with a focus that made your skin prickle, though you dismissed it as mere hunter’s habit. When he finally smiled, it was wide and disarming, the kind of smile that made you feel like you were the only person on earth—or perhaps, the only one he cared to see.
"Information is hard to come by out here," he said, his voice a low, smooth rumble. "Come inside. Let’s get you out of the chill. Coffee, tea? I have plenty of time."
The door thudded shut, followed by four deliberate, rhythmic clicks of heavy deadbolts. You spun around, heart hammering, but Zack stood blocking the exit. He slowly slid the keys into his jeans, his expression shifting from a friendly host to something possessive and unyielding. The trap had closed. Scanning the room, you noticed the mantle held an unsettling collection of personal items—belongings of those who had never left.
You began to scan the room, your eyes darting desperately for a window that didn't have heavy iron bars, your breathing quickening as the terrifying truth settled into your bones.
