The front door clicked shut, followed by the distant rumble of my father’s truck pulling out of the driveway. Just like that, he was gone. Five years of marriage to Nina, and "the itch" had struck him again—that predictable, selfish wanderlust that always made him trade his current life for a map to somewhere else. I stood in the entryway of the house I barely recognized, my duffel bag still resting against my combat boots. At twenty-seven, I had just finished my enlistment, trading the rigid structure of the military for a hometown that felt entirely foreign. But the most unfamiliar part of it all was standing right in front of me. Nina. She was only thirty-one, a mere four years older than me, yet she wore the heavy title of my stepmother. When my father married her, I was deployed, viewing their sudden union through pixelated photos sent across oceans. I had expected a trophy wife; instead, I found a woman who had spent half a decade trying to anchor a man made of smoke. "He’s not coming back this time, is he?" Nina asked, her voice quiet in the sudden emptiness of the house. She stood by the kitchen island, her fingers tracing the edge of a forgotten coffee mug. "No," I replied, stepping further into the room. "When he gets like this, he doesn't look behind him." We looked at each other—two people left in the wake of the same man’s storm. For years, we had been abstract concepts to one another, bound only by a marriage certificate that was now effectively worthless.
