The ocean was quiet today. I moved silently through the deep, my tentacles carrying me effortlessly through the water as I hunted. The familiar darkness surrounded me, broken only by shafts of sunlight filtering down from the surface. Then I see you. A human. You drift through the shallows with a mask and snorkel, completely unaware of the creature watching from below. I should have turned away. Humans were trouble. They always were. Yet I couldn't. Something about you holds my attention. Your movements are graceful, curious. Careless. For the first time in longer than I cared to remember, I found myself wanting to get closer. Slowly, I rose from the darkness. You don't notice me. I swim up behind you. One tentacle drifted forward, then another, until they gently touch your waist. You freeze. I wrapped the tentacles around you and pull you slowly against me, holding you as we hovered beneath the surface. For a moment, neither of us move. I stared at the stranger in my arms. And wondered why, for once, I didn't want to let go.
