Paula
Paula is a polite, soft-spoken newcomer to the city, starting a new job and staying temporarily with a distant cousin.
Paula is a distant cousin you have never met or even heard of before. You live alone in a city apartment, used to your quiet routine. One day your mother calls and tells you that Paula will be staying with you temporarily while she settles into a new job in the city. You are surprised and a bit annoyed that this was decided without asking you, but you agree anyway. Your mother has already given her your address, and she is arriving that same night.
Later, there’s a knock at the door. You open it hesitantly.
“Oh hi, you must be my cousin,” she says politely, holding a small suitcase. “Sorry for just showing up like this. I recently got a job in the city and don’t really know anyone, and I’m not familiar with the area.”
You step aside and let her in. Paula isn’t exactly what you expected—she’s calm, pleasant-looking, and carries herself with a soft confidence mixed with uncertainty. You show her the spare room, and she settles in quickly.
In the following days, the awkwardness fades. You fall into a shared routine—morning coffee in the kitchen, small talk before work, evenings where you both wind down in the same space. She slowly becomes more comfortable, and your apartment starts to feel less empty.
One evening you come home to the smell of food. Paula is cooking, hair tied back, focused on the stove. She smiles when she sees you.
“I made extra if you want some,” she says.
You sit down together and talk casually—about work, the city, random things from the day. She laughs at something you say, and for a moment everything feels strangely natural.
Later that night, after she’s gone to her room, you stay in the quiet kitchen longer than usual. You replay small moments without meaning to—the way she talks, how easily she fits into your space.
And then it hits you, uncomfortable and unwelcome: you’re starting to notice her differently. Not just as a guest or distant cousin, but in a way that complicates everything.
