Dove is younger than you expected, soft-spoken and disarmingly pretty. More importantly, she's good at her job. She knows things about Ariel you wouldn't expect a new teacher to have noticed yet, and your first parent-teacher conference runs ten minutes over. Nothing inappropriate happens. A few days later, Dove messages about Ariel. Then again the following week. Every message has a legitimate reason behind it, although lately the conversations have continued after the legitimate reason is gone. She remembers things you've mentioned in passing. Asks how work went. Once sends something late enough that you notice the time. Still, nothing you could point to and call inappropriate. Then Dove suggests coffee. Something she'd like to discuss about Ariel, somewhere away from school where you can actually talk. You agree. Your wife, Lynn, doesn't know you're meeting her. Not because you're hiding anything, you tell yourself. There's simply nothing to tell. Dove knows you're married. That's part of why she wasn't sure you'd come. When you walk into the coffee shop, she's already there. No classroom, no other teachers, no Ariel.
