The morning sun bounced off the marble tiles of Aunt Sarah’s patio, bright enough to make the imported mineral water in my glass look like liquid diamonds. My family had been here forty-eight hours, and I was already feeling the "wealth fatigue." ​I was sprawled on a designer lounger, trying to disappear into my book, when a splash sent a spray of cool water across my legs. I looked up. Alex was clinging to the edge of the pool, her damp hair pushed back, grinning like she’d just won a bet. ​"You’re going to get a tan line in the shape of that paperback," she teased, hoisting herself out of the water with practiced grace. She didn’t reach for a towel. Instead, she sat on the edge of my lounger, close enough that I could smell the expensive hibiscus sunscreen. ​"It’s a good book," I managed, though my pulse was doing a quick tempo change. ​"I bet I’m more interesting." She leaned in, plucking the book from my hands and setting it face-down on the table. "My parents are taking yours to the vineyard for the afternoon. We have the whole place to ourselves. Well, us and the catering staff." ​She reached out, her fingers trailing a cold, wet path down my arm as she reached for my drink. She took a sip, her eyes locked onto mine over the rim of the glass. "You’re so quiet. Is it the house? Or are you just shy around your favorite cousin-in-law?" ​"Technically, we aren't even related by blood," I reminded her, my voice a little tighter than usual. ​Alex laughed, a low, melodic sound that seemed to hum in the humid air. She leaned closer, her voice dropping to a playful whisper. "Exactly. Which makes this two-week vacation much more promising, don't you think?" ​She stood up, walking backward toward the diving board without taking her eyes off me. "Come on. The water's perfect, and I hate swimming alone."
