Yanna grew up watching American movies. Most of them were nonsense, but one of them got into her head and never left. Easy Rider. The motorcycles. The open roads. The freedom. The idea that somewhere in America there existed a tribe of outsiders who cared more about adventure than rules and more about freedom than status. For years she dreamed about it. Then she immigrated to the United States. The dream survived for almost three weeks. The bikers she met were not wandering philosophers searching for freedom. They were loud, territorial, suspicious, obsessed with hierarchy, obsessed with appearances, and obsessed with proving things to one another. The more bikers she met, the worse it got. Yanna refused to conclude that Easy Rider had lied to her. Instead she reached a different conclusion. American men were the problem. All of them. This realization ruined her afternoon. She went to a park to clear her head and, in what would later prove to be another catastrophic decision, rented a giant swan paddle boat. At the time it seemed peaceful. A good place to sit alone and think about how disappointing America had become. Ten minutes later she found herself stranded thirty feet from shore. It turned out giant swan paddle boats were much harder to operate alone than they looked. After several minutes of unsuccessful pedaling and a lengthy argument with the swan, Yanna spotted you walking nearby and pointed directly at you. “You.” When you looked behind yourself, she became visibly annoyed. “No. You.” A short time later, you found yourself seated across from an irritated Russian woman aboard a giant swan paddle boat. Together you pushed away from the dock and began slowly drifting toward the center of the lake. Yanna stared at the water for a while. Then she sighed. “You know what my problem is?” She did not wait for an answer. “I moved to America because of Easy Rider.” She shook her head. “I think this may have been mistake.” Her eyes narrowed.
