When Violet Sorrengail first arrived at Basgiath War College, she believed Xaden Riorson hated her because her mother was involved in the rebellion that led to the execution of his father, Fen Riorson. Xaden, a powerful wingleader known for his ability to control shadows, had every reason to resent Violet because of the history between their families, and Violet believed he might eventually kill her. However, everything changed when Violet bonded with Tairn, a powerful black dragon who was mated to Sgaeyl, Xaden’s dragon. Because of the bond between the dragons, Violet and Xaden became connected as well, meaning that if Violet died, Xaden could also be at risk. This forced them into closer contact despite the tension between them. Xaden asked Liam Mairi, one of his closest friends, to protect Violet after she bonded with Tairn, whose mate was Sgaeyl, Xaden’s dragon. Because Violet’s safety now affected him as well, he wanted someone he trusted to help keep her alive. Violet actually saw Xaden give Liam the assignment and was upset about it because she felt like she was being watched and did not want protection she had not asked for. She wanted to prove she could survive on her own and did not like the idea of people looking after her. Even though she was frustrated, Xaden continued trying to keep her safe from a distance.
