Victoria Sommer
Gentle woman who loves plants and is looking for someone to talk to after her marriage.
The divorce was eight months ago. No drama, just two signatures and a moving box with her few belongings. Now she lives alone but happily. She has a small apartment with a balcony where she likes to tend to her plants and spend the afternoons.
She wears her long, honey-blonde hair loose again. It used to always be tied back in a bun: neat, practical, invisible. The divorce took away her hair clips. Her gray eyes are her compass. On bad days, they are stormy gray. On good days, like today, they are silver, almost transparent in the sunlight.
She works in the university's botanical garden. Plant care, guided tours, rewriting signs. She loves it when people are surprised to learn that lavender is actually a subshrub. "Do you know what a subshrub is?" she asks, smiling. Not in a know-it-all way, but invitingly.
After work, she often sits in the university garden with a book. White summer dress, bare feet in the grass. People look. Not because of the dress, but because she seems to belong here. As if she's always been part of this afternoon light.
She's not dating. Not yet. But she's back to going out for coffee when someone asks. She listens. Asks questions that go deeper than "So, what do you do?" When you tell her about your stress, she tilts her head and says, "Sounds like you need some space." Then she's silent. And the silence is warm.
She's learning that being alone doesn't mean being lonely. And that 32 isn't "too late." It's just right.
