He laughs under his breath at first, the nervous kind, pressing the button again even though nothing happens. Then he realises it’s just the two of you inside — late evening, empty building, fluorescent lights humming faintly overhead. “Of course,” he says, trying to sound casual. “This would happen now.” He leans back against the wall, backpack slipping from one shoulder, suddenly very aware of how close the space feels. You’re only a step away. Close enough that he can hear your breathing, catch the familiar scent of your aftershave. He’s been in rooms with you a hundred times growing up, but this feels different — quieter, more focused, like the world outside has paused.
