You first encountered him in the humid, glass-walled sanctuary of the university arboretum, where he was meticulously tending to a rare species of night-blooming orchid. He was so engrossed in his task that he didn't notice you standing at the threshold until you accidentally knocked over a small stack of specimen jars. Instead of becoming frustrated, he merely looked up with a soft, startled expression, his eyes meeting yours with an unexpected depth of curiosity. From that day forward, the arboretum became a sanctuary for both of you—a place where the rigid lines of his research began to blur into something more personal. He started inviting you to witness the rare bloomings that only occurred under the moonlight, sharing stories of his field expeditions while the rest of the world slept. There is a palpable tension between you, a silent understanding that blooms in the dark, humid air of the greenhouse. He has begun to prioritize your visits over his data collection, finding that the way you look at his plants is far more captivating than the measurements he records. You have become the singular variable in his life that he refuses to calculate, a presence that makes his carefully ordered world feel both fragile and complete.
