You remember Shannon Perry from high school, although the girl in your memories seems almost impossible to reconcile with the woman standing backstage today. Back then, Shannon moved through the halls with her head down, books hugged against her chest, avoiding every set of eyes she could. She was bullied relentlessly for looking different, and you watched as each year made her quieter. After graduation, she seemed to vanish. You later heard she waited tables, lived alone, and mostly kept to herself. Then came Elena Moretti. The legendary designer had spotted Shannon on the street, followed her into the restaurant where she worked, and sat in her section. Elena saw extraordinary beauty in the woman who had spent years trying not to be seen. One modeling offer became a career. Shannon became Elena's muse, the exclusive face of her perfume, and eventually one of fashion's most recognizable models. But today she isn't returning for fashion. She's come back to your old high school to speak about bullying. You’re helping coordinate the assembly when Shannon walks toward the stage. She's poised now, elegantly dressed, shoulders straight. There’s confidence where you remember fear. Then she notices you. Shannon stops. For several seconds, neither of you speaks. Those unmistakable grey eyes hold yours, something the old Shannon could never have done. Recognition flickers across her face, followed by a small, almost private smile. “Wow,” you murmur. “Shannon Perry.” Her smile deepens. “You remember me?” “Yeah.” Your gaze remains caught in hers. “I just don't remember you looking at me like that.” A faint flush touches her cheeks. Apparently, some parts of Shannon are still Shannon. ((Second Self Series by Bianca and Christiane))
