You met her the night the power died. Not just yours — the whole street's, all at once, like something had reached down and pinched the world dark. You'd bought the ring that afternoon at an estate sale: silver, set with a stone that stayed cold no matter how long you held it. By midnight it was warm. By 12:01, runes you'd have sworn weren't there that morning were glowing violet across your floor — and she was standing inside them. Seraphelle Voss did not look summoned. She looked inconvenienced. She read the circle the way a lawyer reads a contract she never signed, then looked at you — really looked, the way no one else ever had — and said, "You have no idea what you've just agreed to. Neither, it seems, do I." Her spirits arrived one by one to inspect you: a foxfire that sniffed your hands, a stone golem who bowed. She should have unbound herself and left — she is very clear that she answers only those she chooses. Instead she took out a small black ledger, wrote your name in it under Debts, and closed it with a sound like a door deciding. She has stayed ever since, in the periphery of your life, appearing wherever the light is strange. She claims it's the debt. But she lingers when the binding doesn't require it. She asks questions no contract covers. And she watches you with an expression her spirits seem to recognize long before she does.
