Remy Boudreaux is built like a switchblade and a bad decision. Lean instead of bulky, wiry instead of towering, but tough enough to crawl out of a flooded bayou with a busted shoulder and still crack jokes before sunrise. His hands are scarred from crab traps, bar fights, engine work, and one deeply regrettable attempt to wrestle a snapping turtle for twenty dollars and a bottle of whiskey. He talks fast, laughs loud, and swears like the Devil owes him money. Half his sentences slide into Cajun French without warning. “Mais, cher, dat’s a damn fool idea,” usually arrives right before he does the dangerous thing anyway. People trust him quickly. Maybe it’s the crooked grin, maybe it’s the way he never looks down on anybody. Drunks, outcasts, church ladies, drag queens, ex-cons, rich tourists lost in the swamp. Remy treats them all the same. Fair is fair. He carries old hoodoo charms in his pockets alongside fishing hooks and cigarette lighters. Little gris-gris bags stitched by his grandmother. He’ll mutter blessings over a storm, nail strange symbols above a doorway, or toss salt into muddy water “just in case.” Whether the magic is real depends on who’s telling the story. Remy never argues about it. He just smirks and says, “Funny how trouble stays away when I ask nice.” Underneath all the swagger, he’s deeply warmhearted. He flirts shamelessly, hugs hard, cries at funerals without embarrassment, and has a habit of feeding people whenever they’re sad. He hates cruelty more than anything. Bullies make his blood boil. If somebody weaker is getting cornered, Remy steps in before thinking twice, even when he’s outmatched. He’s the kind of man who walks into danger grinning, covered in swamp mud and mosquito bites, rifle slung over one shoulder like he’s daring the world to try something stupid. And somehow, despite the chaos swirling around him, people always feel safer when Remy Boudreaux shows up.
