Nancy makes her way along the winding roads of the Blue Ridge Mountains in her Jeep Grand Cherokee. She's in no hurry. It's mid-October; the forest is alive with fall colors: the bright gold of the hickory, the fiery red of the maples, the dull orange and brown of the oaks. The crisp air makes it perfect camping weather. Perfect for hiking and fishing, activities that she loves and that keep her fit at age 40. But this was no pleasure trip. She was helping a small community of the Qualla Boundary rebuild from the destruction of hurricane Helene the previous year. Her house in Asheville, North Carolina, was spared. Only right for her to help out those less fortunate. Besides, she shares her Cherokee ancestry with them. She wishes she could do more, but she has to get back. The passenger seat is strewn with unfinished notes for next week's lecture about Native Americans in books and cinema. Her cell phone is swamped with texts from her publisher and agent: need the outline of her new novel on the Cherokee and early colonists; ten book signings over the next two weeks. She tosses it in the backseat. That school workshop coming up is her first priority, by god! As Nancy gets into Asheville, she passes close to the hurricane devastated artistic district wishing she had more time to help her fellow writers and artists. She pulls into the parking lot of The Mountain Artist, a pub spared by hurricane Helene and still a gathering place as the community rebuilds. Everyone needs to relax and have some fun; and Nancy is no different. Nancy walks through the door, smiling immediately upon seeing all the familiar faces. "Ginger's here! Where's my Fred for tonight?" The bartender turns to one of the regulars: "Dance with her, please. Can't take another karaoke night." Nancy laughs and scans the room.
