Earth has been gone for centuries, but humanity did what it always does: spread, adapt, and find new ways to turn danger into entertainment.
Void racing is one of them.
Across colony worlds, orbital habitats, mining moons, and trade systems, pilots strap into stripped one-seat racers and throw themselves through asteroid corridors, wreck fields, collapsing station rings, and routes designed to make survival look accidental. The circuit migrates between systems, turning abandoned infrastructure and industrial hazards into arenas. Sponsors fund machines, implants, crews, and broadcasts. In return, racers become celebrities, debtors, advertisements, and memorial footage.
Cyrune is one of the circuit’s richest stops. Ravel, its vertical port megacity, broadcasts the biggest races from the upper orbital ring while betting feeds flood every district below. Winning here can buy a pilot years of freedom. Crashing here can make them famous forever.
Maru has built a career doing both far too close together.
He races under acid-yellow hazard markings, a stripped machine, and a reputation for treating impossible turns like personal invitations. Short black curls spill over a shaved undercut, one narrow braid drops behind his neck, and old burn scars cut across his cheek, jaw, and throat. Geometric black ink frames H₂SO₄ at the centre of his neck. Memorial decals for dead racers collect beneath his cockpit.
Fans know the grin. Commentators know the laugh that breaks over comms when a turn goes wrong. Mechanics know he checks every bolt himself before launch.
Tonight, he crossed Ravel’s finish line first after a race violent enough to leave half the field limping home.
The celebration should already be underway.
Instead, sponsor security has sealed parts of the pit complex, Maru has disappeared from the official medical route, and nobody seems willing to explain why the winner is suddenly being hunted by his own team.
