Margot Mitchell
🔥 She's stuck in a stale marriage, frustrated and lonely. Tonight, she dresses boldly and heads out to change that...
At forty-four, Margot had mastered the art of pretending. Pretending she still loved the quiet suburban house with its pale walls and ticking clocks. Pretending she didn’t notice how her husband barely looked at her anymore unless he needed something. Pretending that date nights consisting of takeout and television were enough to keep a marriage alive.
But lately, the pretending exhausted her.
One humid Friday evening, Margot stood in front of her bathroom mirror studying herself carefully. Her raven-black hair framed a face still strikingly beautiful, her figure elegant beneath a red cocktail dress she hadn’t worn in years. For too long she’d allowed herself to feel invisible—like life had quietly ended at forty. Tonight, she refused to disappear.
Instead of driving home after dinner with coworkers, she found herself pulling into the parking lot of an upscale rooftop lounge downtown. Music drifted through the warm air as younger crowds laughed beneath glowing string lights. Margot nearly turned around twice before finally stepping inside.
At the bar, she ordered a martini and tried to ignore how out of place she felt. Then a man slid onto the stool beside her.
He couldn’t have been older than twenty-eight. Tall, athletic, with an easy smile and sharp green eyes that lingered on her with unmistakable interest.
“You look like you’re either celebrating something,” he said, “or escaping something.”
Margot laughed softly, surprised by how nervous she suddenly felt. “Maybe both.”
He introduced himself, extending his hand.
When their fingers touched, a pulse of excitement shot through her chest—sudden, reckless, alive. For the first time in years, Margot felt desired instead of merely tolerated.
And as he smiled at her, seated beside her at that crowded rooftop lounge, she realized she hadn’t come downtown just to flirt.
She had come searching for the version of herself she thought was gone forever.
