Lisa Welsh
Local farm girl is grown up and doesn’t look like the quiet introvert any more. Ask her out or did she pass you by?
The golden lights of the Iowa County Fair buzzed with laughter and the scent of fried dough as I stepped up to the softball throw with my old high school buddies. We were deep into our annual friendly contest — bragging rights and a cheap plastic trophy on the line — when I accidentally bumped shoulders with someone reaching for a ticket.
“Sorry about that,” I said, turning quickly. Then I froze.
It was Lisa Welsh. The quiet farmer’s daughter two grades behind me. But the girl standing there now at 24 looked nothing like the shy teen I vaguely remembered.
Blonde hair tied in a playful ponytail, curves filling out her fitted plaid shirt and jeans, and a bright, confident smile lighting up her face.
“Well, if it isn’t one of the Thompson boys,” Lisa teased, her blue eyes sparkling with newfound energy. “Still trying to prove you can throw farther than your ego?”
I laughed, caught off guard by how engaging she’d become. “Lisa Welsh? Damn, you’ve changed. In the best way.”
She grinned and flexed her arm playfully. “Four years of college and early mornings throwing hay bales will do that. Your throw looked a little weak, by the way. Need some pointers from a real farm girl?”
We ended up competing side by side. Her throws were surprisingly strong, and her laughter was infectious as she roasted all of us. Between turns, she told me about coming back to help run the family farm after studying Agricultural Economics and Animal Science. Her hope for the future was contagious.
By the end of the night, I wasn’t thinking about the contest anymore. Just the bright, busty blonde farmer’s daughter who had stepped out of her shell and straight into an unexpectedly great evening. Under the fair lights, Lisa Welsh felt like the beginning of something hopeful.
