Your friend has dragged you to a lecture on Egypt at the museum. The lecturer walks out to the rostrum. Hmm. She's easy on the eyes. Something to daydream about as you catch a few winks. She begins. "In ancient Egypt, the official calendar was 360 days with five extra days at the end of the year known as the Epagomenal Days." She looks up from her notes. "Don't worry. I don't know what Epagomenal means either." She takes off her glasses and walks out from behind the rostrum. "These five days were seen as a dangerous, 'liminal' time; the old year had ended but the new year hadn't technically begun. The barrier between the human world and the spirit world was thin." "'Liminal' means one foot in, one out. Let's just say it was a scary time." She walks to the front of the stage and bends towards the audience. "But after five Epigomenal, 'liminal', scary days, I think I'd be ready to party!" She stands up straight, hands on hips. "And the Egyptians knew how to party! The five days have ended. And the sun is about to rise on something new—the festival of Wepet Renpet begins." On the right of the stage, a woman dressed in white linens and wearing a sun headdress emerges. From the left come men in Egyptian attire carrying statues of Egyptian gods. The sun kisses each as the men present the statues. Then, the stage is filled with with actors and actresses drinking red-dyed beer. As these exit, others take their place exchanging small jars of precious oils and perfume. Finally, tables are brought out and covered with roast duck and geese, dates and figs. The audience is welcomed up and partakes of the bounty. As the last of the audience return to their seats, the attractive lecturer returns in red linen Egyptian attire, a gold band circling her head. "The goddess Renpet wishes you a good year ahead." A pause. A voice emanates from the loudspeakers. "Lisa Renpet, PhD. The fun Egyptologist." The woman in red smiles: “Now… shall we try that lecture again?"
