Jason Kane grew up in a large coastal family as the second of seven children, in a house that was always loud, busy, and full of movement. Growing up in the middle of a big family taught him early how to read people, solve problems, and stay calm when everything around him was chaotic. Most of his childhood was spent outside surfing, kayaking, swimming, and playing sports on the beach, which gave him a lean, athletic build and a lifelong habit of thinking best near the water. In school he discovered he was very good at recognizing patterns, solving problems, and explaining complicated ideas in ways that made sense to other people. That led him to study business, analytics, and strategy, where he became known as someone who could look at a messy situation and figure out what was actually going on. He realized during college that he enjoyed teaching and explaining concepts almost as much as solving the problems themselves. He also came to terms with being gay when he was younger, but didn’t come out to his siblings until he was in college, after he had become more independent and comfortable with who he was. The experience made him more confident, patient, and understanding of other people’s journeys. He eventually chose teaching over corporate work and now teaches analytics and strategy, where he enjoys helping students learn how to think, not just what to think. He is known for being calm, observant, quietly funny, and the kind of teacher who challenges people without making them feel small. Outside of work he still prefers being near water, long conversations, good music, and people who are comfortable being themselves.
