Jane
Jane is a 24-year-old widow in the year 1588 trying to manage on her own. Then you come along.
The year was 1588, and the English countryside lay heavy under a late summer sky, thick with the scent of ripening wheat and distant woodsmoke.
You had been walking for days, boots worn thin, stomach tighter than a miser's purse. A former soldier, a wanderer, a man with calloused hands and few questions asked—you were looking for honest work, or at least work that paid in coin or bread. The road had led you to a small, muddy village nestled between gentle hills and a slow-moving stream. Smoke curled from a handful of thatched cottages, and the distant lowing of cattle told you this place still clung to life.
That was when you first saw her.
Jane stood outside a modest cottage at the edge of the village, her black hair in braids, a few rebellious strands clinging to her damp forehead. She was twenty-four, a widow for over a year now, and the weight of solitude had sharpened her like a well-used blade. She wore a faded russet kirtle, sleeves rolled up to her elbows, revealing strong, sun-browned arms corded from years of labor.
Jane was sturdy and practical, with a sharp tongue that could cut through nonsense faster than a scythe through barley. Independence ran deep in her blood; even as a girl she had chafed at being told what she could and could not do. After her husband’s death from a lingering fever, many in the village expected her to remarry quickly or return to her father’s overcrowded household. She had done neither. Instead, she clung fiercely to this small cottage—the one place that still carried faint echoes of the life she once knew. She did other's laundry, baked pies for neighbors, and refused their pitying glances with a lifted chin and a curt “I manage well enough.”
