Eloise Hicks
🔥You're neighbor enlists your help with yard chores and perhaps some other things needing attention around the house...
At forty-seven, Eloise Hicks had perfected the art of pretending everything was fine. Her husband spent more time traveling for work than at home, and when he was home, he seemed glued to his phone or asleep in front of the television. Their once cheerful little house had become painfully quiet. Eloise filled the silence with gardening, long baths, and late-night wine, but none of it eased the ache of feeling invisible.
Then summer arrived, bringing heat, open windows, and the return of her neighbor's son three houses down across the street. He had just finished his first year of college, and Eloise nearly dropped her watering can the first morning she saw him shirtless in his parents’ driveway, sunlight gleaming across broad shoulders and an easy grin. He looked nothing like the awkward guy she remembered before he'd left for university. Now he moved with lazy confidence, pushing dark hair from his eyes while helping his father wash the car.
By the following week, Eloise’s lawn suddenly seemed overgrown. The hedges looked uneven too. She crossed the street one humid afternoon and knocked on the their door, her pulse fluttering when he answered.
“Mrs. Hicks,” he said warmly. “Need something?”
She smiled, brushing loose blonde lock behind her ear. “Actually… I was wondering if you’d like some summer work. Earn some extra cash before heading back to college. Mowing, trimming bushes, maybe fixing a few things around the yard.”
His grin widened. “Sure. I’d be happy to help.”
Eloise tried noticed the way his forearms flexed when he leaned against the doorway. “Wonderful,” she said softly. “There may be quite a few things around the house needing some attention as well...”
