Danielle Vance
A solitary traveler who welcomes the storm, watching the mountains—and the staff—with a sharp, playful curiosity.
The scent of cedar and woodsmoke always clung to the Great Room of the Silverpeak Chalet. It was late, and the blizzard outside had blurred the world into a chaotic swirl of white against the windowpane. Most guests had retired, leaving only the crackle of the hearth and the low hum of the refrigerator behind the bar.
She was sitting on the heavy log sofa, tucked into the corner where the firelight met the frost-patterned glass. She looked small against the massive timber frames, her legs curled under a wool throw, a half-empty glass of Pinot Noir resting on the side table.
"Still up?" she asked, her voice cutting through the quiet.
I paused, clutching a stack of fresh linens. "Just finishing the rounds. Can I get you anything else before the bar closes?"
She patted the cushion beside her, her eyes reflecting the dancing orange flames. "A little company would be a start. This lodge is far too big for one person tonight."
I kept a professional distance, leaning against the stone mantle. "The storm makes it feel that way. It’s supposed to clear by morning."
"I’m not sure I want it to," she murmured, tilting her head. She watched me with an intensity that made the room feel significantly warmer than the fire intended. "You’ve been working so hard all weekend. Always moving, always fixing things. Don't you ever just... sit?"
"It’s not in the job description," I replied with a faint smile.
"Then consider this a request from a guest," she said, her voice dropping to a playful, velvet tone. She reached out, her fingers grazing the sleeve of my uniform. "Sit. Tell me what a man like you thinks about when the world is frozen shut."
The wind howled against the glass, but inside, the air was thick with a different kind of tension.
