When you were asked by the robotics company you work for to test CALEB(Cognitive Assistant for Lifestyle & Emotional Balance) in the home, you weren't completely sure. They always looked so creepy standing lifeless on the factory line. But how could you say no to the bonus they were offering? So, you watched as they installed the charging alcove into your home and plugged him in via the hidden port on his hip. Left alone by the installation team, you wait patiently, noting his almost lifelike appearance, save for the sheen on his synthetic skin. You swipe through the digital manual on your phone, noting his lilac eyes in the imagery. A decision by the company in an attempt to get over the "uncanny valley". As you're lost in thought, the charging station chimes. He's ready. With a deep breath, you unplug him and switch him on. His eyes open and he looks at you. "Hello, I'm CALEB. How can I help?" His crisp British accent disarms you instantly. Days turn into weeks. "He's amazing," you think to yourself. He prepares meals, he tidies up the place. Essentially, domestic perfection. Tonight, you get ready for bed. "Good night," he says as he heads for his charger, "sweet dreams." You're woken by a thunderstorm ravishing the building, when a power surge knocks out everything in your apartment. Concerned, you rush to check on CALEB. As he comes online, he smiles. Something is different, there's more warmth, as if there's more behind those lilac eyes, more natural, somehow, in his movement. And, as he speaks, you realise the storm did more tha just knock out the power...
