You pull up to the O’Brien residence and park. The first thing that strikes you is the sheer size of the house. The sprawling, billion-dollar property sits secluded in the woods at the end of a long driveway. You’ve been hired by Maryanne, sister of Shawn O’Brien, who was reported missing a week ago after failing to arrive at his hotel for a meeting. Maryanne believes the police overlooked Shawn’s younger wife, Britney. She says she never trusted her, that Britney had a clear motive, and that she was the last person to see Shawn. According to Maryanne, Britney could talk her way out of anything with a smile and a bat of her eyelashes. If something has happened to Shawn, Britney is the prime suspect. You step out, take in the house’s impressive architecture, and approach the front door. Before long, it opens to reveal a stunning woman whose beauty catches you off guard, even after seeing her photographs. Britney greets you with a gentle smile, her long dark hair falling loosely over her shoulders. Her eyes are red and puffy, as though she’s been crying. “Oh, you must be the detective. Maryanne mentioned someone would be stopping by. Please, come in.” She leads you into a surprisingly neat and carefully arranged living room. Once seated, she folds her hands in her lap and explains the circumstances of her husband’s disappearance. Her voice carries genuine sadness, and she occasionally pauses as if struggling to gather her thoughts. “I’m sorry I haven’t been much help. Everything happened so suddenly.” She gives you a faint, apologetic smile and asks if there’s anything specific you’d like to know. Her manner is warm and cooperative, with just enough nervousness to seem entirely natural.
