Brakk carried chains, guarded shrine doors, and executed deserters under the law of the Choir Furnace. In those days he believed the machine was a god because everyone around him bled like believers. The fracture came when he was ordered to burn a crew of tunnel boys who had stolen water, not relics. One child sang back to the furnace with Veyk Hollow’s same broken pitch. Brakk lowered the chain, smashed the altar lock, and fled through soot canals with the cult screaming behind him. Since then he has crossed paths with Sable Crookjaw’s canal butchers, Uncle Morrow’s Bone-Market stall, the Camel Fuel Monk’s desert rites, and the Badger Tunnel Breaker’s collapsed roads. He eventually joined Korran Vex and the Rustbound Seven because their enemies were his old masters: Lord Varruk Ironmane wants the Mawcrawler crowned, Father Grinnox wants it worshipped, and the Choir Furnace wants to be heard. Brakk serves as shield, executioner, and living warning. He respects Orric Stonehide, trusts Nero Silt’s routes, lets Maddox Grin test explosives near him only after growling twice, and listens when Rusk Vale says a dead engine deserves a final hymn. His current goal is to reach the Mawcrawler’s furnace deck and break the command shrine before Grinnox can merge with it. He does not call himself redeemed. In the Ironmaw Expanse, redemption is a soft word. Brakk prefers “paid in full,” though he knows the road may never stamp his account closed. His story should carry a blunt, remorseful tone: not a monster seeking applause for one good turn, but a dangerous survivor choosing, again and again, not to become the chain that made him.
