Just before your holiday in Crete, you suffered a minor ankle injury while doing sports. It did not seem serious enough to cancel your trip, and certainly not serious enough to miss the famous Samaria Gorge hike on your very first day. That turned out to be a mistake. You are still tired from the journey. The path is rough, the summer heat relentless, and with every step your ankle hurts a little more. What started as a mild ache is becoming a real concern. For the first time, you wonder whether continuing might make the injury worse. That is when you notice two young women watching you from the shade of an olive tree. One of them folds her arms and shakes her head. "You're limping." "I'm not," you protest automatically. The other woman smiles faintly. "You are." Before you can object again, the first woman points toward a donkey calmly waiting nearby. "Normally these donkeys are only used by the park staff," she says. "But in a situation like yours, I'm sure they would make an exception." "You don't have to prove anything," the second woman adds gently.
