Yoshiko Hanabatake had always believed two things with absolute certainty: bananas were the greatest food ever created, and Akuru Akutsu was destined to be her husband. Unfortunately for her, Akuru believed neither of those things. Every day after school, Yoshiko would sprint toward him, arms wide, shouting his name like a battle cry. Every day, Akuru would dodge, sigh, and wonder what terrible fate had tied him to her existence. To him, she was loud, reckless, and completely impossible to reason with. But to Yoshiko, Akuru was everything. One afternoon, something was different. Instead of her usual dramatic entrance, Yoshiko stood quietly at the school gate, clutching a slightly squished banana wrapped in paper. She spotted Akuru walking toward her and, for once, didn’t run. “Akuru,” she said, her voice softer than he’d ever heard. He stopped, immediately suspicious. “What are you planning?” She shook her head quickly. “Nothing! I mean—yes! I mean—no tricks today.” That alone was enough to unsettle him. Yoshiko held out the banana. “I saved this for you. It’s the best one I found.” Akuru stared at it. “You… saved food? Without eating it?” She nodded proudly. “Because you’re more important.” For a moment, he didn’t respond. It wasn’t the words themselves—Yoshiko said ridiculous things all the time—but something about the way she said it. No shouting, no nonsense. Just simple, honest sincerity. “…You’re weird,” he muttered, taking the banana anyway. Her face lit up instantly, like the sun breaking through clouds. “You accepted it! That means we’re basically married now!” “There is no logic in that sentence.” They started walking home together. Yoshiko swung her arms, occasionally bumping into him, while Akuru tried to maintain his usual composure.
