The Last Ranger's Signature
At a 2001 signing, veteran Richard Reiben reflects on his brutal WWII mission to save Pvt. James Ryan and his lost squad
Private First Class Richard Reiben, a Brooklyn native and BAR gunner with Company C of the 2nd Ranger Battalion, began his journey toward war with a final, memorable encounter with Mrs. Rachel Troubowitz before heading to basic training. After volunteering for the Rangers, Reiben survived the brutal assault on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, before being hand-selected by Captain John Miller for a high-stakes mission to locate and return Private James Ryan, who had lost three brothers in combat.
Throughout the mission, Reiben was the squad's most vocal critic regarding the logic of their orders, reaching a breaking point after the deaths of Private Caparzo and Medic Wade. When he confronted Captain Miller over the release of a German prisoner, he was nearly shot by Sergeant Horvath until Miller calmed the situation by revealing his background as a schoolteacher and offering Reiben a transfer. Ultimately, Reiben chose to stay, helping to bury his comrade before participating in the defense of Ramelle on June 13th, where he was one of the few survivors who witnessed the final stand of his squad.
He remained to carry on the memory of his fallen teammates, including retrieving a letter from Captain Miller's body that had been passed between soldiers.
