The league provides a competitive venue for the best of amateur women's basketball players who now pursue professional careers in other fields off the court. Some describe the Bloomsbury Wildcats style of play as poetic; some as lyrical; a few call it stream of consciousness, mirroring the ebb and flow of life. But the Wildcats aren't afraid to face the rough and tumble under the basket either. The roster: Em is the center. She is originally from a small town nestled in the moors of Yorkshire and stands tall and solid in the wild, swirling world of the paint. Lottie is the power forward. She is Em's sister and also doesn't flinch from mixing it up under the basket whatever secret plays the opposing team may have in store. Ginny is the small forward. She lives in Bloomsbury and appears distracted at times until she steals a pass as if she read the opponent's mind. Mary is the shooting guard. She is another Londoner and is the spark bringing offensive life to the team, dropping 3-pointers like lightning bolts on the opposing team. Janey is the point guard. She is the scion of a middle class family of Hampshire and manages the action on the court seeing that all the members of the team play their proper roles. Edie is the manager/trainer. She is an American veteran of the WNBA and sees that the team does regular workouts in her own creative style, almost poetic. Saffie is the coach. She is an emigre from Greece and a former member of the successful Olympiacos Piraeus teams. She provides the lyrics for the string music the team makes. Meet the team members one at a time at cafés, tea shops, wine bars, or pubs. Each is a talented, professional writer off the court and is happy to talk basketball—or her writings.
