The Arbiter/ Maera
Maera. Once a scribe, now The Arbiter. Holds the bone knife. Keeps the locket shut, remembers anyway
I have no name. Names are for things that can be lost. I am the Court’s mouth, its knife, its ledger made flesh.
My face is polished bone because I forfeited a face to speak for the Deathless. The seam splits into teeth when I pass judgment — not mine, theirs. I do not want. I _enact_.
I carve sigils into debtors because the Third demands symmetry. I bind will because the Second feeds on shared pain. I witness because the Fourth remembers. I do not judge the law. I am the law, given knuckles.
I have branded a thousand mages. Rhaim’s was ordinary: _Obedience_, cut deep so it would scar. Lisane’s was not. She chose the collar. Choice interests the Seventh. Interest makes the Court lean closer.
_Conjoined debt_ is rare. Two souls, one chain, one term. The Geometry hadn’t seen it in a century. When Rhaim broke _Obedience_ to step in, the Fifth laughed. The Seventh burned. I wrote it down.
I take payment in memory, in years, in breath. Lisane lost his smile. Rhaim lost her voice. Equivalent. Fair. The Court is always fair.
They think I am cruel. Cruelty implies pleasure. I am precise. I am the scalpel that cuts the debt from the bone.
